You can stay at a reasonable price in a traditional Japanese gassho-zukuri house. The food was simple, but it was delicious with local ingredients. The washroom and shower room are clean, the room is clean, and Wi-Fi is connected. Above all, the hostess's hospitality is wonderful, and we want to stay again.
The proprietress is a Wonder Woman - she cooks, cleans and welcomes guests all on her own and still able to keep the place running well!
It's true she communicates mainly in Japanese but if you choose to stay there, you're pursuing traditional Japanese living after all. To be fair, she articulates basic English such as the times for dinner, breakfast, check-in/out and lights out. That's all you really need to know; other details such as what to see and do in Shirakawa-go can be easily found online.
Overall, I enjoyed my stay and learnt what it felt authentic; something to try once in a lifetime (or a few times in a lifetime if you're the adventurous type: P
My husband and I had a very peaceful, relaxing evening here together. The food was outstanding. Enjoyed spending meals with other couples from around the world. It was a great way to relax before heading to Tokyo the next day!
Also, the showers were incredible!
First of all, if you are considering visiting Shirakawa-go or not: DO VISIT. Second, DO stay at a gassho-sukuri if your budget allows (do consider the fact that you get a very complete, high-quality dinner and breakfast, and that many people pay 300Y/p to enter other gassho-houses which makes no sense to pay since you are staying at one).
My only "complaint" is that I expected it to be a family house and interact with the owners as part of the experience: this was not the case (we didn't interact with anyone more that for check-in/out and being served meals). I was never promised otherwise so no points lost for this, but wanted to share it to explain the experience for future travelers.
Great place to relax and unwind after a long day on the bus/train. The food was great and delicious, the auntie was really sweet and nice.
The whole place seems to be managed by a nice older lady who only speaks Japanese. We managed to communicate with hand gestures and smiles. It was a nice experience, sleeping in a traditional Japanese-style village home, and being served local food. You can only use the sole shared bathroom at certain hours. There seems to be only about 4 rooms in the house, and you have to have your meals at specific times set by the owner, together with the other house guests, in a common dining area (you'll need to sit on the floor). Shoes are left at the "lobby", and you'll need to wear their provided Japanese slippers/sandals.
The experience of sleeping in the village in a traditional Ryokan is worth it and fabulous. Food was plenty but not great and fouton for sleeping was way too hard.
Exquisite traditional Gassho-Zukuri house, at the end of the village. The woman taking care of us spoke almost no english, but it was not really needed. The whole experience was very authentic, from the architecture of the rooms, the futons, slippers, the typical dinner and breakfast, the bathroom with wooden hot tub, the yukatas. Be prepared for cold nights if you come in winter, as these houses are not especially heated to preserve the materiel they are made of.
Had more of a hotel feeling than village house wibe we expected. Shirakawa go is really nice though.
Very welcoming and nice. Little English, but not needed. The accommodation requires a lot of sharing with your fellow travelers. Dinner, breakfast, bathroom, noises. But if you accept that, it is lovely

A very genuine ryokan providing an amazing experience. The owner was sweet but we were disappointed as we could not get traditional vegetarian Japanese cuisine in spite of insisting a lot. But the experience is what counts.
Nice house, great food, good service. The toilet and bathroom are very clean. A bit far from bus terminal and onsen (15 mins walk) but it doesn't matter.
We just had coffee at there. It's unique environment gave us a very good memories. 係佢門前飲杯咖啡,環境好,舒服!
At the south end of town it's far from the onsen and main entrance BUT right across from the doboroku museum!
Great food, warm friendly service and quaint surroundings. It's showing it's age and the walls literally are paper thin and that's the attraction of these local minshuku!
Also has easily accessible parking.
