Kappei Sushi is a lovely, small, family run restaurant, perfectly situated for a meal or snack before or after visiting the Hakone Open Air Museum, as the restaurant is situated halfway between the very short walk between the train station you exit to get to the museum, and the museum itself.
We stopped in after visiting the museum to get a mid afternoon snack before visiting the rest of Hakone, and were pleased to find they were very vegetarian friendly with English menus they brought to us without asking.
I had the Norimaki Mix, which was all vegetarian and came with 3 different vegetarian cut rolls, each with 6 pieces, all of which were delicious. A typical vegetarian offering in a sushi restaurant in America would be a veggie roll or maybe a cucumber roll or maybe an avocado roll. This was served with cucumber, Japanese dried gourd, and Japanese radish pickles…all of which were lovely and delicious surprises for my mouth. You can also get a cucumber roll on its own which comes with 18 pieces. You're not going to go hungry at this reasonably priced Japanese sushi restaurant.
Service was quick and friendly and it was exactly what we were looking for in a sushi experience in Japan. (Especially as a vegetarian!) If we lived in Hakone (and what a dream that would be…) We will come back here often.
