I know now that this can be a controversial kind of place. From what I observed, these beautiful creatures are well cared for and we were monitored closely and maintained distance when asked. I guess though that there is no way to know from just a visit.
That said, owner was very helpful even with limited English. Requests on how to respect the birds are written out in English for non Japanese speakers. We reserved our time over the phone. Found parking nearby at the bus station, 5 minute walk at most. No food or drink offered here.
