Normal. Not particularly clean, not particularly comfortable, not particularly modern machines. It is incredibly hot in the summer - prepare to sweat.

I can’t find any disadvantage. You can select a washing machine from 200 yen/wash to 700 yen/wash. It can be busy sometimes though.

Did a load of laundry while staying in Shibuya
The detergent was free there were plenty of machines, nice street the locals showed me how to use the drink machine to get change (you have to buy a drink) put 1000 yen note in buy a 100 yen drink and you get 100yen coins in change.
