MY KINDA IZAKAYA
Dinner on our first night in Tokyo turned out to be one of the best all trip.
After witnessing - and taking part in - the famous Scramble at Shibuya Crossing on 7/18/19, we sought a place to eat near our hotel in Asakusabashi. I found this 'izakaya' (Japanese pub) not far from the JR rail station and suggested it to my future fiancée Nichole C, who eagerly agreed.
We strolled in late in the evening, exhausted from 16hrs worth of air travel. Right away I noticed the smoky atmosphere inside and remembered that many places in Japan still cater to the cigarette-toting crowd. They seated us at a small booth where we proceeded to look over the menu.
I appreciated that not only were we given a tablet (meaning we didn't have to wait for a server), all of the items had English translations! Everything was priced at 321¥, or roughly $3 after tax, which further simplified matters. I'm particularly grateful for that, as neither of us wanted to think too much at that point in the day.
Wasting no time at all, we each got a MEGA BIIRU: 22oz glass mugs of Asahi super dry lager. When was the last time you got a gigantic mug of beer for three bucks? !? Personally, I don't think I've *ever* encountered such a fantastic deal at a restaurant, and after flying halfway around the world, it really hit the spot.
Beginning with 'tsukemono' (cucumbers steeped in chili oil) as a starter, we then got 'karaage' (chicken tempura w/plum sauce), beef 'yakitori' (grilled skewers with shoyu sauce), and lightly salted crispy chicken skin. My favorite item were the shishito peppers stuffed with crab meat, and Nichole C's were the fried octopus balls.
Bread = 4.5
Circuses = 4.5
The total bill with tax came to 3852¥, just about $35 USD. Considering that we drank FOUR massive beers and ate fairly well, this was a fantastic value. Previously, we'd read that tipping is not a thing in Japan, as it's viewed as "charity" and considered rude in most circumstances. That principle saved us a ton of money over 2 weeks.
* TL;DR *
Japanese izakayas are the ideal post-work hangout spot, much like our dive bars here in The States. The food is cheap, booze is plentiful (highballs being especially popular among locals), and they're open super late. I can see groups of young adults coming here and having a wild time for surprisingly little money.
Unbeknownst to me at the time, Torikizoku is actually a chain and has numerous locations in Tokyo.we just so happened to pick the one closest to us in Asakusabashi. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to come back here on a future visit, and I'd highly recommend that tourists (American or otherwise) check out this awesome place or one just like it.
ありがとうございます!
Big yakitori sticks and touchpad screens. Menu available in English too. The only downside is they allow smoking.
