14 I highly recommend GenkiJACS for short term or long term study!
My time at GenkiJACS was only short, I only had 2 weeks of leave I could spend attending lessons but it was so amazing to have to opportunity to attend a language school in the short time I had. This is something not many schools offer so it’s great GenkiJACS does. Whether you’re studying for a short time or long time another amazing thing about GenkiJACS is their class sizes, they have a maximum of 8! This really gives every student the ability to receive a lot of feedback and guidance from their sensei’s. GenkiJACS also puts a big focus on conversation practice which is exactly what I needed. The schools my friends are at have huge classes (25 students or more!) and there is 0 focus on conversation, it’s all about passing JLPT levels, that kind of school would not work for me at all so I’m so so glad I found GenkiJACS. Also, the staff are incredibly helpful and really quick to answer any questions or concerns I had, there was a lot of pre-arrival support which was very helpful!
I would recommend GenkiJACS to anyone and hope to come back some day!
Incredible staff and students.
Learned so much while I was there.
If you're thinking about studying at GJ, I highly recommend it
ありがとうー
Loved it here! Great school, awesome teachers and kind and helpful staff! Met so many great people here from all over the world and made a lot of new friends, studying Japanese here was honestly so much fun! They also offer cultural events such as Japanese calligraphy and sightseeing trips in Tokyo! Can only recommend! Thank you so much for a great time and an awesome experience!
I had a great time studying at GenkiJACS Tokyo, really great teachers and great staff!
Most likely the best way to learn Japanese, I highly recommend even if it's just for a short time. They have courses from beginner to confirmed level.
GenkiJACS not only offer quality courses but they can also help you with finding a place to stay (sharehouse, apartment, homestay family.).
Staff is very kind and responsive, they'll assist you with any questions you may have (administrative related topic for instance).
I would recommend this school only for students whose Japanese speaking ability at least equals their level in the other competences such as grammar or reading. However, I would not consider it to be a good idea for "typical JLPT students" to attend classes at Genki Japanese school as they might possibly end up in an upper beginners' course even though they might already be preparing for the upper levels of JLPT (which was my personal experience last year).
One of the best japanese language schools so far!
Very helpful and fun teacher's. I had one of the best times in my life here. Would always come back to improve my Japanese.
I attended GenkiJACS for 2 weeks in March 2020. I took the Core Course Plus Conversation. I really enjoyed my experience and plan on returning soon.
First, I am an older student. I self-studied Japanese at home using the Genki textbook. I was looking for a school that could help me improve and become more comfortable using Japanese.
Small class size. This was important to me. There were 6 students total in my class. I feel it was a key factor for learning. It allowed teachers to give more personal attention and students to actively participate. I found this especially helpful for listening and speaking skills.
The teachers and staff are great! Everyone was very helpful. I felt the quality of the teaching was very good. Not only that, they were so friendly and enthusiastic.
I would recommend knowing how to read and write both hiragana and katakana before starting. There is homework (1-2 pages) every day to help reinforce what you have learned. It is important to attend classes in order to keep up with everyone else. I felt that the cost is competitive compared to other schools based on hours of instruction, class size and location.
I stumbled upon GenkiJacs by accident and I couldn't have wished for a better school experience. I was very well informed before I got there, all my question we're being answered in no time via email and I felt totally welcome.
I made a lot of progress in the three weeks I spent in class and made new friends and acquaintances.
Also the accommodation that they arranged for me was very nice.
I will totally be back!
Only thing maybe: the building where GenkiJacs in Tokyo have the schoolrooms is not the newest and was rather hard to find on the first day.
The most expensive Japanese learning school I have ever seen. Staff is friendly, but the place isn't worth staying at. Too small and they don't give you an official license either. They also charge you 300 usd per week while other learning schools charge you about 600 ~ 1000 usd per 3 months. Be careful where you spend your money.
In 2015 I attended Genki for 3 weeks. While it is comparatively expensive, the classes are incredibly high quality. Small groups with a high focus on putting what you learn into practice. I was put into an advanced beginner course which was slightly above my ability but the classes were so fun and motivating that I managed to catch up in a very short time. The teachers were very pleased as well. I was so sad to leave, as it was without a doubt the best educational experience I've ever had, thanks in large part to the teachers. Incredibly friendly, motivated and approachable people.
To be completely honest though, I wouldn't recommend going if you are starting Japanese from scratch. Definitely learn the basics beforehand and then go. You'll get so much more return on your investment. Anyone can learn Hiragana and Katakana on their own time in a couple of weeks. Don't need an expensive course for that.
Also a word on the location, the school is located in the heart of Tokyo, a short walk from the busiest train station in the world, so in addition to the awesome school you will find yourself in one of the most amazing places on this planet.
I studied at GenkiJACS Tokyo for six weeks in 2019, and it was a real highlight of my time abroad. I think that I learned more Japanese in those six weeks than I learned studying by myself in the previous year!
The school itself is in a fantastic location, so close to great food, cafes to study in and bars to socialise with other students in.
The courses were intense with daily homework, but it was always manageable and never stressful. The teaching emphasises conversation, which I appreciated.
The teachers are a very fun set of characters, who bring their friendly personalities into their teaching style. I never thought that I'd laugh so much in a foreign language class.
The other students were also a cool group of people. There's a good mix of people all ages there - I think that anyone would feel welcome here.
Finally it's worth noting the school events. I attended a free sake festival in Ginza, a day out in Asakusa, and a visit to an open air folk house museum in Kawasaki. All were very fun and enjoyable!
I think this is a good school that I can definitely recommend going to. The staff is really nice and helpful, so I always felt like I could count on them if I had a problem. At the end of a chapter I could really use the grammar I learned, and during my eight weeks I went from chapter 10 to the end of chapter 16 (so slightly less than one chapter a week)
I can definitely recommend this school to beginners, but do keep the following things mind:
1) this is a School for western people. That means that the pace is for people not at all used to Asian languages, who therefore take longer to understand the grammar and get used to vocabulary.
2) most classes are on a rather low level, at the point of me writing this review the highest class is at the end of the second book (~JLPT N4), which means that there are currently no classes for advanced people.
Therefore, please think twice about going to this school if you are at an advanced level or if you are just a fast learner, maybe trying to study a lot by yourself, as you might be held back in that case (classes are made so that homework and the classes are more than enough practice to understand the grammar)
スペイン人です

Just came back home after 2 fantastic weeks at GenkiJACS and already missing it! I took the Japanese Plus Traditional Culture course with additional conversation lessons at beginner 2-1 level. I found the lessons very engaging and fun, with highly motivated teachers that really took time to prepare the lessons and provide lots of feedback. Since we had a small 4-5 people group the lessons were very fast paced but the challenge was part of the fun and I could tell everyday that I was improving as I spoke with my Japanese friends and daily put into practice what I had just learned. I totally recommend it!: D It's also worth pointing out that the pre-arrival contact was very supportive and the school location in Shinjuku is very convenient!
