A review from an honest American: this place struck a great cord.
In short: this is a cost-effective Japanese bar that will make you feel like a local without giving you anxiety.
Make no mistake, this is your run-of-the-mill Japanese bar ("izakaya"). There's nothing special or mind-blowing about it if you've been in Japan for over a week. Of course, there's a cover fee (300 yen). This is typical for any bar in Japan, and cheaper than the usual. Whoever reviewed this as a negative obviously spent less than 2 hours in this city.
Anyway. Here's what we (my fiancé and I) liked about it:
- The prices are very reasonable. We're cost-conscious travelers and are happy when our bill is 4500 yen for 8 drinks and a full dinner.
- They had an English menu and the staff spoke English. For this neighborhood, that's rare and made our lives easy. #sorrynotsorry
- The staff was friendly. None of that "you're white and we won't serve you the same" BS. They were straight up hospitable. There's a button to summon a waiter - we never waited more than 30 seconds after pressing it.
- We had several highballs each, a large warm sake, shochu (liquor), cheesy potatoes (omg yum), fried fish paste (yeah.try it), fried corn, fried tofu, and chocolate.and it was all good. Bar food good, but nonetheless.
Anyways - if you're looking for a low-key, local place to have a few drinks, eat some delicious snacks, and revel in the fact that you're in Japan doing as the locals do, this is a great place to do it.
