34Every little detail has been thought of. Beautiful drinks with thought and precision. Good plan to book. There are only 8 seats.
It is hard to pigeonhole this unique craft cocktail bar. For aficionados of finely mixed spirits it is absolutely worth a visit. The care and thought that goes into each drink is phenomenal. At the same time, having enjoyed the experience I do t know that I would go back; it felt like a perfect one and done session.
Really enjoyed a drink here prior to heading out for dinner. From the minimalist interior design to watching Yamamoto-san make the tasting menu with obvious care and expertise.
Drinks are made with a well curated combination of fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices, and various spirits.
Unforgettable experience with his seasonal cocktail tasting menu utilizing the best of Japanese produce.
Cocktails are low ABV so even 6 drinks should prove no problem for the casual drinker (Still, might want to go on a full stomach)
Such a tasty night! If you want to close the eyes sip a moment of magic and relax while watching Yamamoto-san creating is art.this is the perfect spot! Unique cocktails with seasonal ingredients
The drinks here are amazing. I’m dreaming of going back there again, The alcohol is not too strong so try to go for the six/seven cocktail menu!
This place is awesome.cozy and relaxing.cocktails are unique but taste soo amazing!
great experience! Definitely will go back here every season to try their new cocktails.
An incredible sensory experience, minimalist interior design that allows you to focus on drinks specially made with fruits, vegetables, herbs, spices dosed with highly selected vodka, chūhai and whiskey, perfect combination of unforgettable notes.
Very minimalist vibe but the bartender is an incredibly welcoming, talented host. The cocktails are complex with an beautifully simple composition for each. I’ll be back!
To be perfectly honest, NOT worth. We ordered 4 cocktails course that costed us 5,800 yen (including charge fee) for each. Glasses looked bigger in pictures on its review, but they were actually tiny like a sample drink at Costco. Also, it is rather a smoothie booth than a bar. I didn't taste alcohol at all. If you would like to feel ZEN, there are many other excellent places to go in Tokyo. We wondered why it is popular. (On Tabelog it is three stars and a half though)
We won't return for sure.
The cocktails here are delicious and unique in everyway imaginable. The bar is small and can fit 8 people. The craftsmanship and attention to details are top notch. Highly recommend visiting this location when in Tokyo. Make sure to make reservations as this is a very popular spot for tourists. Owner speaks English and credit cards are accepted.
Unique and educational experience in a quiet decor. 4-5 drink sets are not a problem as amount of alcohol used is low. Uses real craftsmanship when making and (supposedly) fresh ingredients, so I think the price is justified.
Ideas for improvement: Offer a bit more snacks, even if you have to charge extra; drinking 5 drinks might increase your food craving. Also I would appreciate seeing a bit more variety. I've gone 3 times and all excellent and reflected the seasons, but it seems to follow the same general pattern.
Reservations are made by phone only. I called several times to make reservation as indicated on its homepage, but didn't answer it, and I visited to make a reservation, but refused
I think the place is great and special in itself, I put 2-stars because of my personal preference; it is not a bar, it’s rather an experience of taste, which I should have noted before going. You have to order at least 4 drinks per person (which are very small, but expensive), so you better know what you’re getting into. There is no music, it’s very intimate. The cocktails themselves are interesting although too fruit-based for me and have almost no alcohol (I don’t drink to get drunk, but when I go to a good bar, I except to pay for good alcohol).
Had a fantastic, top notch experience at this bar.
Not a regular drinker myself but I enjoyed all the cocktails the bar master served that night. Beautiful presentation and amazing variety of original drinks with seasonal fruit and vegetable.
Love to re-visit.
Wow! The most creative and amazing cocktails I’ve ever had! You need a reservation 30 days in advance, but it is more than worth the wait. The event is more affordable than I was expecting (about ¥7,500 for the high option). You cannot go wrong at Gen Yamamoto
The perfect zen bar. Gen Yamamoto would be equally at home in a monk's outfit. This is handmade mixology taken to an art form. Go with the 6 course cocktail menu and you'll get everything from seasonal fruits and vegetables to vodka made from whey or rare sakes. I had a single malt whiskey with hand ground apple juice from the cold climes of Mt. Fuji, heated gently in a double boil technique that won't be forgotten. Reservations in advance are must.
If you’re someone who appreciates art and soulful curation, you need to see Gen san at work. His cocktails are so simple yet complex. It was my first time here and the level of detail that went into making each drink blew me away. Everything about the place is simple and timeless. We tried the whole 6 set and had a 7th drink as well. I remember sitting there, admiring the thought and work that goes into creating something as beautiful.
Worth it? Totally.
Some of the best and most unique cocktail creations that you will ever experience. Gen speaks English fluently and has lived abroad, so you'll not only be blown away by his special libations, he will entertain you as well. All cocktails are made in front of you as you enjoy the atmosphere of this cozy little bar.
Bar Gen Yamamoto occupies a tiny ground-floor hidden in the shadows of Tokyo’s glitzy Roppongi district. It quickly became one of the most talked about new craft cocktail bars in the city. But this was unlike any other cocktail bar we'd been to before, no glam, no suspenders, no theatrics, no cocktail menu, no shelves even, and absolutely no music whatsoever.
The bar itself is carved out of a two parts of a 500-year-old Mizunara (Mongolian oak) tree. Seats only eight and is manned by one bartender, the owner himself Gen Yamamoto. When you arrive there is a choice between bespoke 4 or 6 drink omakase comprised of hyper seasonal ingredients. There is almost a monastic atmosphere more akin to that of a high end sushi ya.
In itself, this may conflict with western norms (and our group consisted of 4 locals and 4 tourists), and make for some amusing reviews (1 star are you kidding me? Uncultured swines!). But you are going for subtly of flavour, well curated spirits and sourcing of produce. Truth be told, yes, you are not going here to get smashed and pick up but like sushi omakase experience you are there to learn, taste, experience. Ask questions.
