Today is 7June2019. This afternoon I had the pleasure of visiting The Barber for a haircut, shampoo, and shave. My barber was Mr. Nitta and my shampoo/shave specialist was Mr. Iijima. I lived in Japan for 10 years ‘95-‘05 and visit on vacations every year or so. This was the finest barber shop I have ever had the privilege to visit in the world and I’ve been to many in various countries. If you’re used to an all-clipper cut then you’re in for a real treat because with the exception of close to your ears the rest of the cutting is done using real honest to goodness scissors! You could hear the “confidence” in Mr. Nitta’s scissor technique. Following the cut, another staff member will take over shampoo and shaving duties. The shampoo and accompanying scalp massage lasted at least 15 minutes. Following the shampoo, the uniquely Japanese treat of a full face shave commenced. I counted at least 4 hot towel changes in addition to many applications of various shaving foams, ointments, and creams. The truly exceptional portion of the process came when Mr. Iijima shaved the skin between the eyebrows and eyelids and trimmed my eyebrows. No other shave specialist has ever done such a fantastic job for me before. After everything was complete, I was offered a choice of Oolong Tea or iced coffee. If you happen to visit wearing dress shoes or boots, they will shine your shoes during the barber experience. When I commented on the wonderful scents of the shampoo and shaving products, Mr. Iijima informed me that everything they use is handcrafted on-premise. I will admit that Mr. Barber is on the pricey side a bit, however, if you’re looking for the finest service sometimes you must pay a bit of a premium. I speak Japanese fairly well. If you do not, bring a Japanese speaker with you or have google translate ready. Another option might be to bring pictures on a cell phone of what hairstyle you want. From now on whenever I visit Tokyo, my first stop will be The Barber in Hiroo!

Best barber in the area. I really like their shampooing and services around the hair cut. It’s a place to relax.

Ridiculous place, not sure any man should risk his throat there!
Based on good reviews, I went on Saturday to take an apppointment for the next day. Staff confirmed my appointment and asked me the fill a form with my details.
When I came back the next day, different staff told me that I have no appointment and that they can’t do anything: ‘please go away’.
Overall staff was rude and unpleasant. They did not even try to look whether there was a confusion or asked more of my details.
After 3 years in Tokyo, I can tell it was my worst service experience in Japan.
