25Beautiful shop with refreshing anmitsu. No English menu available but not too hard to navigate.
Get the anmitsu with shirotama and brown syrup. There’s a reason the first episode of Kantaro: the Sweet Tooth Salaryman features this dessert. YOU. WILL. BE. CHANGED.
While in Japan this time I went through a cultural dessert tasting and what can be more iconic than the old time favourite Anmitsu.
*Anmitsu is a Japanese dessert that has been popular for many decades. It is made of small cubes of agar jelly, a white translucent jelly made from red algae. The agar is dissolved with water to make the jelly*
The place is tiny but classy at the same time, definitely wood is the main element who gets your attention when you first walk in.
After I was greeted I was offered a seat and a menu, I’m here for the anmitsu so that makes things easy.
Hatsune cafe lets you choose between shiromitsu, a clear sugar syrup, or kuromitsu, a black sugar syrup that is similar to molasses, but milder. I asked if I can have both.
The agar jelly it’s so refreshing and it brings out the natural sweetness of the fruits, both syrups can be way to much for some one who ain’t a sweet tooth but to me are just perfect!
If you’re in Tokyo and you feel like having something classic yet refreshing and spectacular then Anmitsu is the answer!
I came here because of a Netflix show called “Kantaro: The Sweet Tooth Salaryman”. This place was on an episode that featured anmitsu and other mochi and jelly delights. I asked for an English menu but still wasn’t sure what to order. The owner didn’t speak much English so I said omakase, which meant chef’s recommendation, and she pointed me in the right direction. I got a bowl of sweet red bean paste with mochi, different jellies, fruit and brown sugar. It was delicious and I devoured it quickly. It was a nice break to a long day. I’d definitely come back here again.
